I'm ok with computers, but have never done any hardware before I wanted to put my fairly new Gig IDE hard drive into the same machine as secondary it has no OS and had no idea how to go about it. It wasn't after checking this thread! They're both hooked up and run beautifully now. Extra big thanks to suRoot for saying to set the jumpers on the IDE secondary drive on the computer to cable-select before plugging it in! That's what made it a snap the way to set the jumpers was right on the side of the hard drive.
I used the disk management console in windows XP: 'start' 'run' 'type: diskmgmt. I want to set up the sata so I can copy the files off the other two hard drives because I don't want to use them anymore. It's only files I will be transfering not programs so you dont have to worry about telling me that I will have to redo all the shortcuts and stuff. I just want to run the sata alongside the IDE drives temporarily. Can you help? It covers both IDE and SATA devices, starting with removing an existing drive and then covering the installation of your new hard drive.
If you are replacing your current IDE hard drive either with a bigger drive of the same type or a new SATA device then the first step is to remove the old drive.
If replacing it with another IDE drive then note where the cables go. All IDE hard drives have the same standard socket types and the IDE cable should have an alignment notch to ensure it is inserted the right way see fig 1. After removing the fixing screws there are four, two on each side of the drive bay gently take the drive out of the chassis and put it to one side. The data cable of a SATA hard drive is slightly easier to remove than their IDE counterpart, however it is better to unplug both cables before you remove the fixing screws.
A clean installation avoids copying corrupt or duplicate registry keys and other errors that tend to creep into any hard drive, but it takes a lot of time. The clone disk image is stored temporarily on external media such as CD, DVD, or even an external hard drive.
See my related article How to Clone a Hard Drive for more on that process. This will make sure the computer doesn't try to boot from the IDE drive. There are no jumpers on SATA drives to specify a master or slave device. That sounds logical, but it's wrong. Even if you have to purchase a SATA host adapter, the performance improvement can be a better investment than buying a whole new, faster computer. Posted by: steven 08 Oct I believed that was a sign of impending failure. The deciding factor was simple. The Sata drives do not come with a cable. I already had one from the old hard drive. It works just fine.
Posted by: Bill 10 Oct Posted by: Seree 11 Oct Windows 7 has finally automated this and installs the appropriate drivers automatically.
